A Look Behind A Historic State Championship

History was made this weekend when the Cherry Creek Bruins became the first team in school history to take home a Women’s Basketball State Championship. This one hit close to home for our Marketing Director, Meghan (Scholbe) Overton, as she was a member of the 2003-04 Cherry Creek team that was the runner-up in the 2004 State Championship game. Here is a look back.

We think about those three points often. We came so close to winning but instead walked away with a runner-up trophy and enough memories to last a lifetime. Seeing the program finally take home the state championship this weekend was a great feeling and something we all still felt a part of.

One of my favorite things about playing high school basketball was my teammates. I played with two of them since 3rd grade, four of them since 6th grade and all eight seniors on our team played Gold Crown Basketball in middle school. I even remember all heading to the Coliseum in 1999  to watch the Creek women’s basketball team compete for the state championship. Little did we know we would be there five years later.

I have an older sister who was a four-time state champion on the Cherry Creek swim team, so I was exposed to the tradition of Cherry Creek athletics early on. During her high school swim meets, I would sneak away to the gym to watch the basketball team practice or watch their games. I still remember the feeling when I made a Gold Crown basketball team and put on my Creek jersey for the first time. I was so proud and already felt part of the program. Plus, I was ready to compete!

Playing with the same girls in high school as we did growing up made our experience much more meaningful.  We knew each other’s personalities, motivations, study habits and how we played the game.  We also had the same goals; 1 - win league, 2 - win state, 3 - be listed on the women’s basketball banner in the trophy hall.

Fifteen years later, our team was cheering for the 2019 team all the way from California to New York. One of the best parts of this win was reconnecting with each other and reminiscing on our high school days. There is no doubt we would love to be back in a gym with each other, even if we were running RPM’s.

Congratulations to the 2019 State Champions, Cherry Creek! You had more people cheering you on than you even know.  Thanks for making sure the women’s basketball banner didn’t stay empty any longer.

What a terrific story for you to share! Having those great memories with your teammates. I’m trying to convince Creek to have a ceremonial gathering when the banner goes back up with “2019”. I would like to get all Alumni players together for the celebration! I will contact you and you must invite your teammates! Thank you so much!
