Pero, \u00bfqu\u00e9 sabemos realmente de esa promesa en lo que se refiere a la seguridad y eficacia de los suplementos? \u00bfSon realmente la mejor manera de que los ni\u00f1os rindan m\u00e1s? Nuestros expertos del Hospital Infantil de Colorado comparten sus puntos de vista.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Como m\u00e9dico especialista en medicina deportiva, a menudo me preguntan pacientes y padres sobre la seguridad y eficacia de los productos de nutrici\u00f3n deportiva. Los suplementos deportivos son una industria de 1.400 millones de d\u00f3lares; la gente busca esa p\u00edldora o polvo m\u00e1gico que nos convierta en m\u00e1quinas musculares.<\/p>\n<p>Y por eso queremos saber... \u00bfAlguno de los suplementos del mercado es inseguro?<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfNecesito tomar un multivitam\u00ednico diario? \u00bfQu\u00e9 productos me har\u00e1n m\u00e1s fuerte, m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido y m\u00e1s delgado?<\/p>\n<p>La realidad es que no existe una respuesta definitiva. Muchas personas, incluidos m\u00e9dicos y cient\u00edficos, no se ponen de acuerdo sobre este tema. Pero al buscar mis propias respuestas para los pacientes, sin duda he llegado a mis propias opiniones firmes sobre el asunto.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>P: \u00bfAlguno de los suplementos del mercado es inseguro?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0S\u00ed. La pregunta es... \u00bfcu\u00e1les? En 2009,\u00a0<em>Sports Illustrated<\/em>\u00a0public\u00f3 un fascinante art\u00edculo sobre la seguridad de los suplementos deportivos, \"What you don't know might kill you\" (\"Lo que no sabes puede matarte\"), en el que destacaba el hecho de que la industria de los suplementos est\u00e1 muy poco regulada y carece de normas de seguridad o eficacia.<\/p>\n<p>La Ley de Salud y Educaci\u00f3n sobre Suplementos Diet\u00e9ticos de 1994 (DSHEA, por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s) permite a los fabricantes de suplementos hacer alegaciones de salud relativas al efecto de los productos en la estructura o funci\u00f3n corporal, aunque no pueden hacer alegaciones restaurativas para ''diagnosticar, mitigar, tratar, curar o prevenir'' una enfermedad o afecci\u00f3n m\u00e9dica concreta.<\/p>\n<p>Y en 2003, la US\/FDA Task Force on Consumer Health &amp; Information on Better Nutrition estableci\u00f3 el requisito de que los fabricantes del sector deben investigar la identidad, potencia y pureza de sus productos suplementarios, pero, una vez m\u00e1s, no les exige que demuestren su eficacia o seguridad.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfQu\u00e9 significa esto para los consumidores? Francamente, no sabe si el producto que est\u00e1 comprando es seguro, contiene contaminantes peligrosos o ilegales, tiene efectos secundarios desconocidos, etc. Para los deportistas de \u00e9lite y de competici\u00f3n, la contaminaci\u00f3n con sustancias ilegales o prohibidas puede significar la descalificaci\u00f3n de la competici\u00f3n o de su liga.<\/p>\n<p>Mi opini\u00f3n es la siguiente: lim\u00edtate a lo que sabes que funciona y es seguro, como una dieta sana, un descanso adecuado y un entrenamiento centrado.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>P: \u00bfDebo tomar un multivitam\u00ednico diario?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0La mayor\u00eda de nosotros obtenemos los niveles adecuados de vitaminas y minerales de la dieta diaria t\u00edpica. Mientras siga una dieta variada con un arco iris de colores, es probable que ingiera todo lo que necesita. Sin embargo, hay algunas excepciones.<\/p>\n<p>Los atletas de competici\u00f3n que entrenan a un nivel m\u00e1s alto y tienen un mayor gasto energ\u00e9tico pueden beneficiarse del calcio, hierro, zinc y vitaminas a\u00f1adidos. Del mismo modo, las personas que corren el riesgo de sufrir una carencia de nutrientes tambi\u00e9n pueden beneficiarse, como los vegetarianos\/veganos, las personas con alergias alimentarias u otras restricciones diet\u00e9ticas, o los atletas que superan una enfermedad o lesi\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>P: \u00bfQu\u00e9 productos me har\u00e1n m\u00e1s fuerte, m\u00e1s r\u00e1pido y m\u00e1s delgado?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>A:<\/strong>\u00a0Aunque sabemos que algunos productos pueden mejorar el aspecto de tu cuerpo o tu rendimiento deportivo, la realidad es que la mayor\u00eda son inseguros, ilegales o est\u00e1n prohibidos por los principales organismos deportivos. Entre ellos se incluyen los esteroides anabolizantes, las prohormonas (androstenediona, DHEA) y la efedrina.<\/p>\n<p>Aunque la cafe\u00edna es legal y se ha demostrado que tiene efectos beneficiosos como estimulante de la actividad aer\u00f3bica y disminuci\u00f3n de la percepci\u00f3n del esfuerzo, est\u00e1 restringida por la NCAA y el Comit\u00e9 Ol\u00edmpico Internacional a partir de ciertos niveles. Y la Academia Americana de Pediatr\u00eda no recomienda ning\u00fan consumo de cafe\u00edna en j\u00f3venes menores de 18 a\u00f1os.<\/p>\n<p>Las investigaciones han demostrado que las prote\u00ednas en polvo son ineficaces, al igual que los suplementos de amino\u00e1cidos. Es mejor consumir una cantidad adecuada, pero no excesiva, de prote\u00ednas en la dieta habitual.
